Note: To participate in summer plus semester position, there are two ways to participate.
Option 1: We can find a placement at one school that will stay the same for you throughout the summer and fall.
Option 2: We place you in one school for the summer program and one school and a different school for the fall.
Each option comes with different criteria and inclusive benefits. Read below to learn more.
Schedule:
There are two types of year long schedules you could have if you participate for both the summer and two semester. They follow along with "Option 1" and "Option 2" mentioned above.
Under "Option 1" you would teach at the same school with the same schedule for the entire length of your stay. Your schedule would include an average of 20 hours a week for about 11 months. You would have a week or longer vacation time in the winter, in May, and in the beginning and end of summer.
With "Option 2" you would teach for two semesters with the typical semester schedule (20 hours a week for two periods of 5 months) but during the summer, you would teach up to 30 hours a week for up to a month and a half. The summer program typically begins in early July and runs until mid August. There are two options of how to get reimbursed for the extra teaching hours, and that will be discussed in the salary section below.
Living Arrangement:
All teachers will stay in a furnished room with the minimum of air conditioner, attached bathroom with hot water, bed, desk, chairs and electric outlets. Most sites also have TV, refrigerator, telephone, and computer as well. The utilities will be covered sufficiently for your needs.
Under "Option 1" you will get medical coverage throughout your 12 months of your stay, but there are a few options. Some schools will provide insurance through a third party insurance provider, some schools will provide a medical coverage stipend and some schools will give free access to their on campus clinic.
Under "Option 2" you may only get medical coverage during the 2 semesters but not the summer. Additionally, during the summer you may need to have a double occupancy room instead of a single.
For any concerns or problems you may have you will be given a staff person’s number and your local host’s numbers that you can contact for help.
Salary:
The salary plan, once again, can be broken into 2parts: "Option 1", "Option 2"
"Option 1": Your work and therefore your salary as well as your schedule will stay constant throughout your stay. Salary could range from 4000 rmb ($500) to 5000 rmb ($625) depending on qualifications and location. You would also get the reimbursement for a roundtrip plane ticket, and travel stipends of up to 2200 rmb.
"Option 2": You would work a regular semester for 20 hours a week for the two semesters with a salary and compensation for a roundtrip plane ticket. However, during the summer you would teach 30 hours a week for 4 weeks, with up front roundtrip ticket, 4 days touring, hotel and food provided. You wouldn't get salary directly from your school, instead, since you get the roundtrip ticket under the summer program alone and get reimbursed for the equivalent of a one way ticket for the fall or spring, your salary would essentially be up to 8000 RMB ($1000 USD) that you would get repaid for at the end of your year long contract.
Touring:
For those under "Option 1" touring will not be included as part of your package, but schools often arrange little local tours for teachers as part of their independent programs. Under "Option 2" you would have around 4 days of inclusive touring. You would have the option of touring either Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong, along with some other local destination. Please note however, that your requests for touring destinations would be determine the location of your school and since some schools have higher qualifications or restrictions than others, not all requests might be fulfillable for all teachers.
Requirements:
The essential requirement is being a native English speaker. Persons with a better pronunciation and grammar, teaching degree, college degree, or experience teaching abroad will be preferred. All are welcome to apply. Your chance for acceptance depends on the number of applicants.
